Wendy & Ben: A Dream Away Lodge Wedding

Tucked away in western Massachusetts is the wonderfully eclectic Dream Away Lodge. I have to admit, coming up the drive, knowing that I was on my way to a wedding, I made the assumption that I was 100% in the wrong place. The Dream Away just isn't your typical New England wedding venue. I mean, there's a neon Coors Light sign in the front window! But, no, this was the right place. And, it only took a minute to realize what an amazing venue the Dream Away is! Unlike anywhere else that I have photographed a wedding, this is an absolutely unique and fabulous place.

The first weekend in October I traveled southwest to Becket, MA for Wendy and Ben's wedding. The weather was not looking inspiring for their outside ceremony -- it looked like rain and was pretty cold. None the less, the rain held off and we enjoyed a great day in the Berkshires...

I met up with Wendy in the cabin out back while she was getting ready...

I was immediately greeted by one of the most engaging and warm smiles that I'd seen all year. And we got to see a lot of it all day long...

While I was finishing up with Wendy, David took a few minutes to photograph Ben before he left for the ceremony...

It seemed like the sun was going to try and come out, so it was off to the ceremony for us, which was a short walk up the hill behind the Lodge...

The ceremony took place on top of a small granite outcrop in the woods. Their families were seated on rustic benches, wicker chairs and I think even a sofa or two. Guests gathered around this mostly standing-room ceremony under the canopy of green...

Sealed with a kiss and the breaking of the glass!

Then a little walk through the woody path lined by twinkle light on our way for a few portraits...

I love the main bar with it's colorful light panels...

Out back was a tent with the dance floor. There were a couple of fire places outside the tent to keep the chill at bay, and the details inside were rustic, whimsical and colorful. Here's a few...

Lynn & Adam: A Castle in the Clouds Wedding

I just shot my first 2012 wedding this past weekend, but am resolved to getting all of my 2011 weddings up on the blog. To that end, I am excited to share Lynn and Adam's Castle in the Clouds wedding from this past September.

Castle in the Clouds is a pretty magical place. Accessible only by way of trolley or foot path, and towering over Lake Winnipesakee, one feels like they've stepped into a storybook wedding. The property is gorgeous, even before you get to the "castle"...

Lynn was getting ready in the Carriage House. Upon arriving, I took a few moments for details...

I found Lynn (left) and her mom (right) getting ready upstairs...

Makeup and hair done, it was time to get dressed. There wasn't enough space in the room where Lynn was getting ready, so she and her bridesmaids moved out to the hall. Her Maggie Sottero ball gown though perfect for a fairytale castle wedding, was large...

Laced up and time to catch the trolley up to the castle for the ceremony...

The Castle in the Clouds, formerly known as the Lucknow Mansion, was built in 1913/14 to blend naturally into the 5,500 acres upon which it sits. At one time a private residence, the mansion is now primarily a tourist destination... and fabulous wedding venue!

While guests took the trolleys back down to the Carriage House for the reception, we lingered a bit for portraits. I love these stone walls and stairs...

A final dip in front of the mansion and then it was time to head down the road for us too... we just had the treat of basking in the warm light of the setting sun on our ride...

I am excited to share a fun project from this past summer. Working with several local wedding vendors, I participated in a color-themed photo shoot hosted by Seacoast Weddings Magazine. Several teams made up of florists, cake designers, hair and make up stylists, stationers and photographers were each tasked with showcasing a a different color wedding. We were Team Blue, and here are a few of my favorites...

One of my models for the day was 2011 Miss New Hampshire LacyJane Folger. She needed a lot of coaching in front of the camera (right!)...

After bride and bridesmaid portraits, I headed inside to photograph the blue table design by Marcia at Tie The Knot Floral Studio...

And one more of Miss New Hampshire to end the post because, well, just because...

Senior Portrait: Aaron

Thought I would share a fun senior portrait session from October. This was easily one of the nicest nights this Fall, and an absolutely amazing sunset. Fortunately for me, I was photographing a very laid back fellow who stuck it out through the entire sunset. Of course, we started out earlier than sunset for some natural daylight portraits...

Then the sunset kicked off... And it was going to be a good one!

We shot a series of "lit" portraits, using flash fill on Aaron to allow the colors of the sunset to come through in the photographs...

And the colors kept getting richer and richer, culminating in a bright red/orange for a few minutes before slipping away...

Anna & Jake: An Inn on Newfound Lake Wedding

Continuing my push to blog all of my 2011 weddings before I shoot my first 2012 wedding in a few weeks, I am excited to share Anna and Jake's celebration at The Inn on Newfound Lake on September 17. Their wedding was quintessential New England -- old NH Inn, lake front ceremony, barn wedding. Add in a beautiful couple and glorious weather and, well, the recipe came together wonderfully!

I started the day in Anna's suite as she was getting ready with her ladies. Here are a few details to kick off with...

Meet Anna. I got to see a lot of this smile all day long!

The energy amongst the girls when Anna came out with her gown on was overwhelming, and everyone pitched in and took a turn buttoning up the back, after gawking, of course...

All dressed, I was able to grab a few portraits of Anna before we left...

While I was with the ladies, my friend and talented photographer Tara was hanging with the guys. Here's Jake being helped with his tie...

They got it right, and Jake looked sharp...

Following the first look, we took time for some of the formal group portraits as well as portraits of Anna and Jake. Here's one of Jake that I like a lot...

Then it was off to the lake-side ceremony. Here is the beautiful chuppah as Tara found it prior to guests arriving...

The programs were made by Anna's mom using an old wood block stamp that Anna's sister made years ago...

The setting was just amazing; worth toasting even...

And the ladies were enjoying things as well...

We photographed the rest of the family and group portraits on the beach following the ceremony. This lined us up well to take advantage of a sunset for a few more portraits of Anna and Jake. These are among my favorite portraits of the season. I love shooting the dramatic light at sunset, and this night did not let me down...

The sky seemed to change entirely during this portrait session. The final colors captured were so vibrant. Just incredible!

With the sun fully set and light gone, it was time to head inside for the reception. While folks were getting settled we grabbed some details of the room, etc., starting with rings. Bling, bling...

The Inn has this incredible restored barn for receptions. Not the most photographer-friendly room, but still stunning -- high vaulted ceiling, dark barn wood, and an amazing antler chandelier.

Jacques Flowers did the arrangements for the day, and I loved the tall centerpieces in the dining room...

There were several toasts, including a heartfelt and humorous one by Jake's father...

Then the first dance. I love the silhouette captured by Tara on the right. It's so much fun when the second shooter can take a few risks during such important moments...

"No pressure" family photo shoot

I must confess, I go into every shoot with a bit of nervousness. It's never debilitating, rather, I think it keeps me on my toes and trying harder. This was definitely the case for this family session. No, the nervousness had nothing to do with the fact that I was photographing my friend and fantastic photographer Tara and her family. Nope, not at all.

I've gotten to know Tara over the past couple of years. Aside from being a wonderful wedding and portrait photographer, she has a lovely family with two children about the same age as my own, and her husband Chris is a talented graphic designer. They are exceptionally talented and incredibly nice people. I am so excited to share a few photos from their session at the Great Island Common last month. Enjoy!

Jessica & Nick: A Danversport Wedding

In early September I had the pleasure of spending a beautiful day with Jessica and Nick. Although we live less than an hour apart, we had not met in person prior to this day. I work with a number of couples each year planning their destination wedding, and although that was not the case here, it felt that way. After several conversations and many emails, it was great to finally arrive at Jessica's parent's house. When I arrived the ladies were not yet back from the salon, so I began with a few details while I waited for their return...

Once Jessica arrived, she set straight to getting dressed and ready...

Everyone was pitching in, and Jessica was enjoying the attention, I think...

Across town, my good friend David was with Nick at their home. Here are several great images that he captured getting ready...

Prior to the ceremony I snuck in this group shot of Nick and his groomsmen...

Back at Jessica's parent's, I took a few minutes for portraits before hopping in the limo and heading to the church. She looked stunning, and I love her flowers, which were by Konstantina's Floral Design Studio...

Peek: Stephanie & Scott's Common Man Inn Wedding

On Sunday I wrapped up me 2011 wedding season at The Common Man Inn in Plymouth, NH with Stephanie and Scott. Their wedding celebration was actually their one year anniversary, but they had not been able to have a wedding with family and friends a year ago, so, they planned a wonderful day on their first anniversary. Their adorable son was so great all day, even without a nap. I am certain my son Colin, who is about the same age, would not have fared nearly as well! Look at that face...

Great light, great family at Great Island Common

The other day I had the great pleasure (I have to stick to the theme, right?) of spending a little time with the Bateman family at Great Island Common in Newcastle, NH to capture some family portraits. I love lifestyle family sessions like this where after a little shyness and hesitation on the part of the kids, they ultimately open up and their real personalities come out.

Renee & Colin; A Mt. Washington Hotel Wedding

At the end of August -- yup, I am that far behind in my blogging! -- I had the great pleasure of spending the afternoon with Renee and Colin at their small Mt. Washington Hotel wedding. We had a beautiful weather in the White Mountains, but on this day, a little further to the south, hurricane Irene was battering the coast and heading north and inland. Although we did not experience any major weather on this day, overnight and into Sunday the north country would get battered and bruised.

The storm was the buzz all around the hotel. But at this gorgeous mountain venue you'd never know what was brewing.

I just love the main foyer at the Mount Washington Hotel. It was here that I met Renee and Colin. Their small wedding was super laid back. When I walked in Renee and Colin met me at the front door ready to go. Our plan was to spend a little time taking portraits prior to the ceremony.

These two were so sweet and cute prior to their ceremony. They were so relaxed, and truly enjoying their day and time together...

Following portraits, I wandered over to the south lawn where the ceremony was set to take place. Loved the simple, yet beautifully decorated arbor overlooking Crawford Notch...

Flower arrangements were by Sara Severance the Hotel florist. Sara always does an amazing job! Here comes the bride...

Following portraits, I spent a little time hanging out with Renee and Colin and their guests while they waited for their planned dinner in the Hotel dining room. After a short wait they moved off to enjoy the rest of their evening and I said goodbye and headed south. But, not before stopping to capture some images of the AMAZING sunset. The Mount Washington Hotel often has stunning sunsets, but this one was incredible. The sky was on fire...

Rainy day, lakeside family photos

Often when coordinating family photo sessions we look for nice weather, and sometimes end up rescheduling when Mother Nature does not cooperate. But that is not always possible, as was the case with Carol's lovely family. You see, they were vacationing on Lake Winnipesaukee in late summer from Seattle, so our window of opportunity was very small. And, by the end of the week, we just had to go for it. I suppose, being from Seattle they were at least used to some drizzle!

When I arrived at the lake front house it was just just starting to sprinkle while I took a few minutes to captured the scene. A little ominous looking, eh?

But it quickly turned to a torrential downpour, so we setup inside for some portraits. Kids are always fun...

The lovely family...

It did finally manage to clear up, though no one was getting too far away from their umbrella...

One advantage of a cloudy day -- at least when the rain stops -- is there is nice even lighting. This was what I hoped for all day, and we were able to end the session with a lakeside family portrait...

Laura & Justin: Private Farm Wedding

So, it's taking me a little while to unbury myself from wedding day blog posts. I definitely will be posting well into winter! As I try to catch up, I'll kick off with Laura and Justin's August 20 wedding in Alexandria, NH. They planned a mid-day wedding on Laura's grandparent's farm, which was wonderfully accented with all of the mandatory farm details, including old barns, rusty trucks and expansive fields...

I joined Laura and Justin prior to their noon ceremony. Here Laura and her bridesmaids peek out from behind the barn to see if everything was set to go...

And Justin and his groomsmen eagerly await their arrival...

It was warm in the field for this noon service, but it was such a cool location I hardly noticed.

Mr. and Mrs...

Following the service we were able to sneak away for some portraits around the farm. Naturally, we had to include the namesake of the farm...

We moved around to the other side of the house to a beautiful, intimate garden. I love these shots...

And this is likely my favorite "prop" of the year, a killer old Ford! Bride and groom + rusty old truck + dilapidated barn = rustic awesomeness...

Then it was back to the tented reception...

Once inside, Laura and Justin enjoyed their first dance as husband and wife...

And I enjoyed watching these two have a great time!

One of Laura's good friends decorated the cake with fresh cut flowers. In fact, all of the flowers for the day were done by Laura and her family and friends...

Laura was full of great expressions all day... "Hmmm, what should I do with this?..."

Toasts, er, roasts...

Then party time. I believe this was a rousing rendition of Michael Jackson's Thriller...

Senior Portrait: Liz's Fort Foster Session

This past weekend was one of the nicest of the year, and I was psyched to be home with the family... well, for most of it. I wasn't shooting a wedding, but still managed to sneak in a couple of shoots. I started with an engagement session in Boston, and then a senior portrait session with my niece Liz, which I guess was still technically time spent with family.

Liz is a beautiful girl inside and out, and was a huge help to us this summer, lending a hand with our new son so that I could get some work done or my wife could catch her breathe while I was off shooting. So, I was super psyched to spend an evening with her for these important pictures. Here are just a few of the many captured on a glorious Fall evening...

Lee & Chris: A Glen Magna Farm Wedding

I was really looking forward to Lee and Chris' wedding in August. I first met them a year earlier at their home on Boston's north shore, and as I was driving back north Lee called to book their date. Fast forward nine months and I met up with them again at their home, but this time for an engagement session. We spent a gorgeous evening at the beach in Swampscott chatting about the fast approaching wedding, among other things. I was definitely excited for their day to arrive! Fast forward again and I met Lee as she was getting prepared for her wedding ceremony at Glen Magna Farms in Danvers, MA...

Kylee & Matt: A Haverhill Wedding

Weddings are fantastic gatherings for families. People come together from all over to celebrate the joining of two lives as well as two families. As a wedding photographer I get to share in many of these celebrations each year. Sometimes I am fortunate enough to have a personal connection to the event, as was the case with Kylee and Matt's wedding. Two of my wife's nieces (I guess mine too, huh) were bridesmaids. It was great spending the day with not only Kylee and Matt's family, but some of my own as well.

I met up with Kylee, my nieces, and the other ladies while they were getting ready. Below, my niece Katie helps Kylee with some finishing touches...

Caitlin & Aaron: A Mt. Washington Hotel Wedding

As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I'm a mountain boy. On almost any free day -- which seem to be getting fewer lately -- you'll find me up north. So, I always enjoy traveling to the mountains for a wedding too, and there are few venues that I can think of that feel quite as "in the mountains" as the Mt. Washington Resort. Nestled deep in Crawford Notch and at the base of Mt. Washington, it's, well, spectacular! I've found that the weddings I have photographed there have all been for people with a deep appreciation and passion for the outdoors. Hikers, climbers, skiers, people who love being outside, and Caitlin and Aaron are just those kind of people. Not only was I fortunate enough to be spending the day in the mountains, but also at the marriage celebration of a couple of kindred spirits. So, I am very excited to share a peek at Caitlin and Aaron's big day...

I met Caitlin early as she was finishing up at the Spa, so I took the chance to photograph a few details before she arrived back at the room. Flowers for the day were by Carrie at Dutch Bloemen Winkle...

Following the service we took care of all of the formal portraits, and a few of Caitlin and Aaron too, but we planned on sneaking out later for their portraits so that they could enjoy some time with their guests before the reception...

At the Mt. Washington, the view is grand, but so is the Ball Room. It's always decked out to the nines, and especially with Carrie's gorgeous centerpieces...

Caitlin and Aaron's first dance was fantastic! These two can dance...

In between toasts and the meal we snuck back out for portraits. We were treated to fantastic alpenglow on the Hotel from the setting sun out on the front lawn, and then back out on the Jewell Terrace...

I love the color pop from the alpine garden that surrounds the Jewell Terrace, with the last bit of daylight silhouetting the White Mountains...

Back inside and post dinner, it was time for parent dances. Here's Caitlin and her father...

Then it was time to party! The Big City Band rocked the house. I LOVE live bands. Nothing keeps a crowd engaged like a band...

As the night drew to a close, the band really let loose and it packed the dance floor. During the last song just about everyone in the room was on the floor and surrounded the newlyweds. The energy was awesome...

Lauren & Matt: An Ocean View Inn Wedding

It's always fun to go to a wedding right on the water. Being from Delaware, being on the ocean meant fine sand beaches backed by sand dunes. It also meant Grotto's pizza, the boardwalk and Dogfish Head brewery, but that's a whole other story. So anyway, I am still enamored by the rocky New England coastline, and better yet photographing on it. Combine that with a couple of climbers getting married, and Lauren and Matt's July wedding at the Ocean View Inn was a day that I was really looking forward to.

I started the day at the Inn with Lauren as she and her bridesmaids were getting ready for the ceremony. Here are a few details from the ladies...

Following the service we spent time with both families for portraits, and then moved on to one of my favorite parts of the day -- spending a little time with just the couple away from everyone else. It just so happened to coincide with some really beautiful light...

Doug spotted this great shot on the left unbeknownst to me at the time, framing Lauren and Matt in order to also capture their likeness in the reflection pool. It's always fun going through my second shooter's images!

Kim & Andy: An Inn at Pleasant Lake Wedding

Rounding out my June weddings this summer was Kim and Andy's special day at the Inn at Pleasant Lake. The week of their celebration we had a fair amount of rain, and this day dawned quite ominous. Fortunately, the showers stayed at bay, and the sun even peeked out for the ceremony held on the lawn of the Inn. It wasn't until we were all safely under the tent during the reception that the deluge ensued, and the weather proofing of my LowePro roller bag was tested again (the first time was when my basement flooded this past March, which is a whole other story!). So, without further adieu, I am excited to share a glimpse of Kim and Andy's big day!

We arrived as Kim was getting ready with her ladies...

Prior to the ceremony Kim and Andy opted for a first look. This is becoming exceedingly popular with couples, not only allowing them to see each other before the rest of their family and friends do, but also to get their family portraits out of the way so that they can attend their cocktail reception.

And Ando looked like he could hardly contain his excitement!

Following dinner, the band Last Kid Picked kicked things off, and nearly blew the top off the tent. Fortunately they didn't because the rain was pounding as much as their bass! The flower girl jumped right up on stage with them, and she spent most of the night there too.

Engaged: Lee & Chris in Swampscott, MA

Last month I met them again at their home for engagement photos. We took a short drive to the coast in Swampscott for the session. Catherine & Oliver: Franconia Inn Wedding

With weddings every weekend, some engagement and family sessions thrown in between, and an almost 4-month old at home has added up to a little bit of blog neglect. But, I am excited to dust things off with Catherine and Oliver's wedding from June.

Being from the seacoast, but a mountain boy at heart, I love traveling up into the notches. So, I was very excited this Saturday to be headed up to the Franconia Inn for Catherine and Oliver's celebration.

Upon arrival, we met up with Catherine getting ready...

Catherine was wearing a beautiful yellow and gold saree for the wedding. If you have not seen it, it's quite a production putting on a saree...

I loved this family jewelry box that Catherine dug into to finish off her dress. She came out with a half dozen gold accent bangle bracelets...

A couple of quick portraits -- can't get enough of the rich colors in the sarees! -- and it was off to the church...

We first met up with Oliver at the church, and here he is making his way to the front of the church with his parents. Think he looks excited?

Catherine was excited too. She wore this grin all day long!

The officiant for the ceremony was a long-time family friend who has married other members of the family. It was very cool because there was obviously a familiar connection, and the ceremony was filled with "insider" references, but delivered so as not to leave folks feeling left out.

The bridesmaids, er, men, uh, attendants? Who cares; everyone was smiling...

I was accompanied for the day by my good friend David who captured this great glance from Oliver's sister...

An exchange of vows, and a kiss...

Followed by a fantastic German tradition -- a wood sawing ceremony. I was not familiar with this, and have not Google'd it, but as Oliver put it, it was to be the first challenge that the newly married couple tackled together -- lumberjack style! Catherine was into it...

Ceremony complete, it was back to the Inn for some family portraits, including this one of both families...

Did I mention that I loved the colors? Dressed worn my Catherine and the "cousins"...

All wrapped up, we had a little time to spare before the reception, so we went off looking for some blooming lupines. We found a lovely field perfect for some portraits of the newlyweds...

This is one of my favorites from the day...

We headed back to The Franconia Inn with a little time to kill before the cocktail hour and reception. We took advantage of this luxury of extra time to photograph details of the reception and the Inn...

The Franconia Inn is a wonderful venue, which comes fully equipped for a New England inn wedding, plus the added feature of horses! These beautiful animals were grazing right next to the tent, which I thought was very cool...

Inside the tent, the details, just like everything else this day, were wonderfully colorful. The centerpieces, and all flowers, were done by Emily Herzig Floral Studio...

All of the tables were themed with places familiar to Catherine and Oliver, including Old School Hardware near where they live, which happened also to make a fun frame for the wedding rings...

Once everyone settled into the tent, there were a handful of really fun toasts. I love the toasts, especially when done really well, as all of these were. Here's Catherine's father...

Which warranted a fist pump, of course!

Following toasts was the meal. As I often do, I snuck the couple out for a few more portraits during that magic twilight moment when the sky is a rich blue...

A tractor, strawberry picking and a family photo shoot

In the middle of a busy wedding season, it was nice to step out of the wedding photographer role for a few hours for a fun family portrait session a couple of weeks back. I first met Jason going on 7 years ago mountain biking in Exeter, NH. We crossed paths again last August at Whitney and Travis' wedding, and then again at Kristen and Joe's wedding this past May.

I met Brett, Jason and their son Brannock at Jason's family's farm for the shoot. It made a fantastic backdrop for this lovely family...

Brannock just recently turned one, which was the initial motivation for family portraits. Such an adorable little boy...

We wandered around a bit and found Jason's grandfather's tractor, which of course Brannock loved...

But what he loved even more was the strawberry patch...

Yup, he had a few...

And what little child does not love being tossed up into the air by their dad? I know my daughter loves it!

And a final portrait taken at the "family portrait location", where everyone has their photo taken. We couldn't pass that up, right?

Thank you for sharing a beautiful evening with me, and having me document a small piece of this wonderful time in your lives. Kids grow up so fast!

Leah & Scott: A Lake Winnipesaukee Wedding

I spent a couple of days on an island on Lake Winnipesaukee in southern New Hampshire for Leah and Scott's wedding last month. On Friday, I took the twenty minute boat ride out to Sandy Island for the rehearsal dinner. The evening was gorgeous, and the day ended with an incredible sunset as the boat returned me to the mainland. You can see more of that here. Saturday was the big day. Unfortunately, it also dawned cold and wet. We arrived at the boat launch to a steady rain and a very overcast Lake Winnipesaukee...

I've never been one to let a little rain ruin a wedding day, but I would lie if I didn't say I was a little bummed about the weather this day. I don't often take a boat ride to a private island for a wedding, and we had so many ideas for portraits that we had schemed up. Quickly putting that aside, however, we jumped right in. A few details to get started...

My friend Doug, who was with me for the day, captured this great ring shot...

Leah had plans to get ready in a cabin near the outdoor chapel. Figuring that the service would be moved indoors, I instead found her getting ready in the buildings where the service would now also be held...

Leah wasn't going to let the weather get her down either, and looks giddy with excitement for her wedding...

Meanwhile, Doug wandered through the rain to find Scott getting dressed at a nearby cabin...

Did I mention the rain? I grabbed this portrait of a slightly soggy Scott, followed by Doug's image of the guys escorting -- and trying to keep dry -- Scott headed over to Leah for their first look...

First looks often happen in relative privacy. This was how Leah wanted it to happen at least. However, guests had started arriving via water taxi an hour+ before the ceremony, and because of the rain did not have anywhere to go other than the ceremony building -- where Leah was. After a little coaxing and corralling of guests, I was able to clear the room at least. I couldn't ask guests to leave the porch, of course, so we had more than a few eyes peeking through the windows as Leah came out to meet Scott...

We then left all of the guests for a short bit, stopping under some cover from the rain to snap a few pre-ceremony portraits...

With everyone dried out, and nerves settled -- things were not quite going how Leah had planned, but she pressed on, always with a smile -- it was time for the ceremony. Relocated inside, two massive stone fireplaces kept everyone cozy and warm for the service...

Doug snuck up to the landing behind the fireplace and found a nice perspective on the left, and caught Leah focused on Scott's vows...

The deed done, the newlyweds make their way past their cheering family and friends...

It was important to Leah, especially, to have some outside portraits taken by the water. I mean, they were married on a private island, right?!?! The weather was not so conducive to making this happen, but I kept my eye open for a window of opportunity. Just after sunset, but before dark, the rain stopped. Briefly. It happened to also coincide with Leah and Scott being served dinner, but I interrupted them all the same. We quickly went out to the pier, after making sure the dinner staff would not take their plates, and setup for some portraits. It all happened in a few minutes and was one of the funnier couple shoots I have done! Doug was wrestling the light stand as a pretty significant wind tried to send it into the lake. Leah and Scott had trouble stopping their laughter at the absurdity of the moment. I think the images made it all worth while, and I can't wait to see the video footage of the shoot from Morgan Kirkham who was there for the day also...

Portraits on the water completed, it was back inside -- where the sane people were -- for the rest of the reception and dinner. A highlight of the day for Scott, I am told, was the beer canoe...

There were toasts...

And then cake and dancing...

At the end of the evening the rain had almost completely stopped, so we snuck back out for a few more portraits, this last one taken under a moonless night, along a stone lined trail...

Thank you Leah and Scott for having me at your celebration. The day did not unfold as planned, but was filled with lots of excitement and emotion. It will definitely be a day to talk about for many years to come!

A great (birth)day

Today is Abby's third birthday. How could it not be a good day? But, in fact, it was a great day. We all as parents have visions of the things we will do with our kids. I've been waiting 3 years for today (not to make a HUGE deal about it or anything). I don't believe in pushing kids into things, but there is nothing wrong with providing a little opportunity in the "right" direction. So, on Wednesday my good friend friend Jim gave me a birthday present for Abby -- a children's climbing harness. This evening, after a couple of minutes convincing her the harness would not hurt her, she spent 10 minutes swing from the ceiling. Then my heart swelled as she decided to climb to the ceiling with a top rope belay and jump off. "Do again! Do again!" No need to twist my arm. I tried to get a little video, but it's tough filming while giving a hip belay to your toddler. I caught this 20 second clip and then ran out of memory. It's all I need though. Happy birthday, Abby. Get that turtle!

Leah & Scott: Sandy Island Wedding Rehearsal

I am in the middle of culling images from Leah and Scott's wedding day last weekend, but thought in the meantime I would share a peek at their rehearsal BBQ the day before.

Leah and Scott had a fantastic weekend planned on Sandy Island, a private family camp on Lake Winnipesaukee only accessible via boat. Many of their guests were staying on the island with them, and many more were coming over via boat for the BBQ and wedding the next day. I was excited to being joining them on this relaxed Friday afternoon. I arrived at my appointed time to a secluded dock where I was to be picked up by island staff.

After a 15 minute jaunt over to the island, I stepped off the boat to a wonderfully appointed campground. Leah had "touched" almost every place in the common areas of the camp with signs and flowers, such as these below. I arrived just in time for BBQ outside under the tall pines...

Everyone was digging in and enjoying themselves. And the food looked -- and smelled -- so good...

Following dinner, Leah, Scott and I took a stroll. We had not had an engagement session previously, so took the opportunity to explore locations around the camp during an evening photo shoot...

Ultimately, we ended up lakeside, and stayed here awhile, affording us all sorts of wonderful evening light...

Here are a final couple of images from the evening. The sun had just about set behind the island as I snapped my last portraits. Then it was back on the boat and my return to mainland. I shot the sun dipping behind Sandy Island from the stern of the Big Sandy as my last few frames of the day...

Kristen & Joe: A Camp Kabeyun Wedding

Well, my summer wedding season has begun, and I expect it to be a great one. I am very excited to be photographing many amazing couples, at great venues, working with several awesome professionals, both on the front end and behind the scenes. It's going to be a busy summer, and I am psyched!

So, to kick things off, I had the great honor of photographing Kristen and Joe's wedding at Camp Kabeyun on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Last summer I was introduced to Kabeyun through Ashley and Scott's wedding, so it was exciting to go back again, though in a different season. To add to the past connection train, I met Kristen and Joe at Whitney and Travis' wedding last August, so I was even more excited because I was going to get to see a lot of familiar faces. It was just a really fun way to start things off.

Kristen and Joe met 3 years ago as counselors at Camp Kabeyun. Kristen was a newcomer, and Joe a "lifer" with his connection to the Camp going back twenty-some years. So, when they began planning their wedding the location was obvious.

Camp Kabeyun is located in Alton, NH on Lake Winnipesaukee. It is a gorgeous location on just about any day, even this overcast one...

I arrived as the ladies were getting ready. More often than not things are running a little behind schedule, but not today. When I arrived everyone was dressed and pretty much ready to go. Here, Kristen adds a few finishing touches...

And enjoying a light moment with her bridesmaids...

Kristen's dress was a beautiful off-white gown, perfect for this rustic wedding. Flowers were by Roanne Robbins of Honeyfield Flowers, who also happens to be the wife of the Camp Kabeyun's director.

It's always fun when mom and dad arrive and see their daughter shortly before getting married...

And with a little time to spare, we snapped a few portraits and some more details...

Leaving Kristen to her final preparations, I hiked over to Pine Point, where you'll find the fire circle and the location for the wedding ceremony, to meet up with Joe.

Joe was busily trying to get things organized, corralling family and guests alike. It was obvious that he spends his summers shepherding boys at Camp. We did find a few minutes for some portraits, however...

At the appointed time, the music began by Mary Dellea, Dave Talmage and third member whose name I did not catch, the guests took their seats, and Joe entered with his mom and dad...

Followed shortly by Kristen and her father...

Here Joe's eyes are fixed on Kristen, while his best man and brother Gary gives me a smile...

Everyone looks happy. I love it...

Pine Point is a great location. It can be tricky on a really sunny day for a photographer, but I was loving it on this slightly overcast day. Here is a wide shot that does a great job of setting the scene...

So, as I mentioned, I had met Joe and Kristen at a wedding last summer. I remembered them as two very fun and really nice people. I did not, however, remember Joe's goofy side. In so many of my photos from the day, including this one from the ceremony, Joe was striking funny faces making Kristen laugh out loud...

Funny faces aside, I am fond of this next capture of Kristen with all of her focus fixed on Joe...

The vows... which were wonderfully written, and artfully displayed in a birch wood frame...

Following the ceremony we worked quickly through family portraits, leaving time for some intimate portraits of the bride and groom. One of my favorites in the image at left below...

A few drinks, lots of laughs and then off to the reception dinner. I was able to stop them for a few more portraits on the way, including this brief kiss beside one of the cabins...

It was at that time that my commitment for the evening ended and I said good night. By the smell of the brisket on the grills I wished I was staying, but a short evening worked out well for me as my wife and I are still trying to adjust to life with our new baby boy.

Thank you Kristen and Joe for inviting me to your wedding and for being so gracious throughout the day. It was great to see you again, and with so many "connections" now, I can't wait to catch up with you again in the future!

Twins???

OK, one more baby post and then back to status quo. I just think this is so cool...

I am a twin. My brother Keith lives in Wyoming (lucky!). Growing up we were pretty much inseparable, at least until high school, and then we branched out in our own directions. But it really only lasted those four years. Throughout college, although at different schools, we got together all the time. It was freshman year that we started climbing; Keith and I found a local indoor climbing gym and then proceeded to climb something -- including an old railroad trestle -- most weekends for a loooooong time. My most memorable early adventures (and misadventures) all involved Keith. I definitely believe that twins have a bond, a strong one.

As my last post noted, we just recently had a little baby boy, Colin. A few weeks after we found out we were pregnant we found out that Keith and his wife were also pregnant with their first. Very cool! We joked about the twins having kids at the same time, but our due dates were several weeks apart. Maybe the same month, but unlikely. Then we both found out we were having boys. Very cool, again. Things start to get really exciting as you get really close. We knew we were having a c-section, and a week or so before our scheduled date it was pushed back a couple of days. Then, the day before that new delivery date, my brother calls and says, "guess what, the doctor's scheduling us for a c-section TOMORROW!" No way!

Long story short, our little fella Colin has a psuedo-twin brother 2,300 miles away in Wyoming, born about 11 hours apart. For me, as a twin, I think it is a bit surreal, a little weird and really cool. My brother and I have a strong bond, and I hope as these two grow up they do as well...

A new addition

On my blog I'm typically sharing stories and images from other people's special day. So I am very excited to instead be sharing a little from our own special day... A few weeks ago we welcomed baby Colin into the family. Here's our healthy little man less than an hour old...

And reunited with mom...

Meeting Colin for the first time was very special. Just as special for me, however, was when I brought our almost-three year old in to meet him and see her mom. We had all been eagerly awaiting Colin's arrival. Abby was so excited to see him, and it was so wonderful to watch...

Abby loves her dolls -- diapering, feeding, putting them to bed -- so for her it looked like she was slipping into a comfy, worn slipper. She was so comfortable and gentle with him, and ready to jump right in taking care of her little brother. All of a sudden she did not look two...

After a few days in the hospital everyone came home and began settling in. Colin seems to settle in wherever he is at the moment...

After a few weeks life is starting to settle down. There is still a lot of balance to be found with a newborn and toddler at home, but it's early and we'll find it.

Daizha & Tim: Mt. Washington Hotel Wedding

This past Fall I was excited to receive a referral from my friend Jim Shimberg for a July 2011 wedding. Daizha and Tim were climbing friend of Jim's, and I do love climbers' weddings. But unfortunately I already had a wedding scheduled for their date. I was able to in turn refer them to my friend Jennifer at Aphrodite Wedding Photography who had photographed one of their friend's weddings. So, although I was unavailable, I was very excited everything was working out for thm.

Fast forward several months and I hear from Tim that he was facing deployment and would likely be away for their July wedding, and was I available to photograph for them in three weeks? Now, there are not a whole lot of February weddings in New Hampshire, so I was free and once again excited for the opportunity to work with them!

Daizha and Tim's wedding took place pretty much in the heart of a White Mountain winter in early February at the Mt. Washington Hotel. Despite being pulled together rather quickly, had you not known you'd never have guessed. From beginning to end the day flowed smoothly, the details came together flawlessly, and everyone looked fabulous. As I arrived at the hotel, I was treated to a truly stunning view of the summit of Mt. Washington...

To begin, I met up with Daizha at the salon...

As things wrapped up at the salon I took the opportunity to capture a few details. Here's a few close-ups...

It's always fun when couples do a first look and see each other beforehand. Not only does it allow for a great moment, but often the couple allows time for portraits too, as was the case here. Tim met Daizha at the bottom of the stairs in the main lobby, and then we bundled up and headed outside...

I love this next series of portraits taken on the back terrace. Snowflakes had begun falling, but the light was still very good and Daizha was a trooper regarding the cold...

One of the images that they really wanted was a wide shot with the hotel in the background. To do that we needed to head down the drive a bit to get some distance between us and the hotel. The cross country ski trail made for a great location because we were able to get out into the field but not post-hole up to our thighs in the deep snow. Unfortunately, though, by the time we got down there is was a full-on blizzard out. Still, Daizha was a trooper...

Back at the hotel, a few final preps and it was time for the main event. I captured Daizha making her way to the service with her parents and sister...

Tim's expression says it all as he sees Daizha walking down the isle with her father. A grin holding back a huge smile...

Because the wedding was pulled together in just three weeks, they chose to keep it very small. Just the family and closest friends were in attendance; I believe 18 people total...

As with the rest of the day, they were all smiles during the exchange of rings...

Pretty much all ceremonies end with a kiss. I love that they ended with a high five!

Following the ceremony we snuck away for some night portraits. The grand stair case has been seen already in this post, but it is such a hallmark to the Mt. Washington we needed some portraits there. We then ventured back outside where it was still a blizzard out. The expansive back porch made a great location...

I had in my head an image that I really wanted to try. It's snowed at many weddings that I have photographed, but never an all out blizzard with accumulations in inches per hour. I wanted to shoot something that really captured that storm on their big day. So, with not a whole lot of convincing, I was able to get them out in the snow yet again. Personally, I am quite happy with the series of images, with the one on the right being one of my favorites from the day...

Back inside the reception was ready to kick off with toasts and embarrassing stories...

And of course, the stories were taken quite well. All smiles yet again...

Following dinner there was a first dance and then parent dances...

I think Daizha's in love...

I always like father-daughter dances...

But sometimes the mother-son dance is the real emotional one, as was the case here...

Formalities out of the way, it was time to party. Despite being a small reception, they still got down with the best of them...

Maineline, finally

In the Spring of 2001 I moved from the mid-Atlantic to New Hampshire. At the time I'd been rock climbing for seven or eight years and ice climbing for about five. The mid-Atlantic, however, is not known for its stellar ice climbing. Sure there are some plums to be picked, but for "real" ice climbing I would venture north each winter to the Adirondacks of New York with my twin brother Keith. We had so many great times road-tripping north -- Roaring Brook Falls in about nine pitches, simul-soloing the cliffs of Pitchoff, freezing nights shivering while camped on Chapel Pond. But I hadn't yet swung an axe in New England proper. So, before I even moved to NH, one of the first things I did was pick up a copy of Rick Wilcox's Ice Climber's Guide to Northern New England. Before the the first frost of 2001, I had already dog-eared my copy, marking all of the classic lines that I had to do.

For my first outing in December I climbed the Black Dike on Cannon Mountain, one of the most classic. Over the next ten years I've ticked most of the climbs that so inspired me when I moved here... Repentance and Remission, Omega, Bragg-Pheasant, just to name few... as well as put up a few first ascents of my own. But one line, up in the back of beyond Maine, remained noticeably undone. Described in the guidebook as "surely one of New England's most spectacular ice climbs" and "more at home in the Canadian Rockies," Maineline is one of the most impressive pieces of steep ice around. But it's up there; way up there. Each year I would get psyched to go, and each year the four+ hour drive kept me closer to home where I could get more climbing done in my ever dwindling number of days out.

In a bit of a spur-of-the-moment decision, my good friends Jim, Josh and I made plans to go do Maineline. Sure it would be a long day, but it had to be done. The dog ear on that page of the book had to be unfolded. So, when I awoke yesterday at 4:30am I was dismayed to see lots of snow. This five hour drive just got a lot longer. But, plans were set, and as Jim always says, "you don't bail on your climbing partners." So, I put the car in drive and white-knuckled it to Falmouth, ME to pick up Jim. Then on to Newport to pick up Josh. Then to the back of beyond up past Greenville on Moosehead Lake and finally to Mt. Kineo. Six and a half hours later I parked. The sun was out, the sky blue and the route looked amazing from across the lake. Best of all, I was enjoying the day with my buddies. Jim makes me laugh too... Way up here you do feel like you've taken the plunge...

I had no frame of reference for this climb beyond the guidebook, but Josh and Jim, who have each done the climb several times, were amped about the current conditions. It sure looked good to me! This is pitch 2, at least when done in 3-4 pitches...

When we arrived a party from Orono was just starting up the climb. I was bummed. All this way and we were scooped. Instead, we started up a nearby feature to check out some future possibilities and perform some shenanigans. Half way up the pillar, our neighbor on Maineline took a bit of a, well, monster whipper. I'm talking 50+ feet. I've never seen someone fall so far. Scary does not describe it. He was shaken, experiencing some wrist pain, but otherwise unharmed (i.e. unbelievably F%$#ing lucky!). Their misfortune was our gain, and we rapped down to the start of Maineline. We offered to retrieve their high gear, and with that, I was off...

I led the first two pitches as one, finishing in an ice cave on the left-hand side. The left image above was taken by Jim when I was halfway up the column. Both Josh (shown above right) and Jim followed much faster than I led and joined me in the cave. Jim then led from the cave to the trees, finishing the route in two long pitches as the sun quickly faded. We rapped down, finishing in the dark, which was followed by a freezing walk back across the wind blown lake to the car at 6:30pm. Then it was a five hour drive home (more snow).

I'm super psyched to have finally climbed this amazing line and to be able to check off this long-standing, must-do New England ice climb. I can't say when exactly I will make the trek back to Kineo, but I now know first hand the jewel that resides way up in the back of beyond. Until then...

Jenna & Jeff: A Sky Meadow Country Club Wedding

I'm slowly wrapping up my 2010 wedding posts, and I am very excited to share Jenna and Jeff's big day. I first met Jenna and Jeff at Jenna's mother's while they were visiting from San Diego and ironing out wedding details and plans. It was a great meeting, and I was very excited to end up working with this laid back and super nice couple. Following our first meeting, all of our photo planning for the wedding was done via phone and email. So, many months later, it was great to catch up with Jenna again at her mom's as she was getting ready for her big day.

To start off, below are a couple of details of Jenna's dress and rose bouquet...

It's always fun to see moms helping their daughter's get dressed. There's lots of excitement, usually some tears, and always memorable moments. Here mother and daughter share a laugh while adjusting the dress...

Jenna's matron of honor was her cousin who shared the task of buttoning up the dress. Quite the undertaking. Lots and lots of small buttons...

While we were wrapping up, my good friend and fantastic photographer Doug Levy was busy documenting the goings-on up the road with Jeff and his groomsmen...

It's fun shooting with other photographers. You get different perspectives of the same moments many times. For example, here's a moment that I captured during the ceremony...

There were lots of looks, smiles and grins between Jenna and Jeff during the service. Always fun to see. I regularly comment that I get the best seat in the church (well, lack thereof) because I get to move about quietly looking for these moments. There is one moment that all weddings have in common, though, and that is the kiss at the end...

Following the service we all headed to Sky Meadow Country Club for the reception, which was decorated fantastically in bright red, black and white...

Right after arriving, and during the cocktail hour, we snuck the newlyweds out to the back veranda for a few portraits...

We also wandered out back to this great archway for some portraits. These were amongst my favorites from the day...

Following our portraits and introductions, Jenna and Jeff shared their first dance. I love the up-lights. They typically add a lot of depth and punch to a venue...

Sarah & Scott: A Glen Magna Farms Wedding

Last summer I traveled south towards Boston to meet Sarah and Scott for the first time. They were visiting from Montana and looking to relocate to the Boston area. At the same time, they were also planning a wedding for the Fall. Nothing like taking on everything at once! Fast forward a couple of months and I again met Sarah and Scott, but this time at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, New Hampshire for their engagement shoot. I always enjoy getting to know a couple a little bit better through an e-shoot, and this Fall evening was no exception. Here's a few takes from that evening...

Fast forward yet again to November and I am meeting Sarah and Scott on their wedding day. They were now living north of Boston, successfully relocated from Montana. I began the day at their home where Sarah was getting ready. Below are a few details from the house, including this image with a couple of prints from the e-shoot...

With Sarah dressed and ready to go, it was time for me to head to the church and skedaddle and meet up with Scott...

I found Scott in the back of the church with his groomsmen looking a little nervous...

As good a time as I was having hanging out with Scott and his groomsmen, there was a reason we were all here...

It's always cool to see how the bride's father reacts when walking his daughter down the isle. As the father of a two and a half year old little girl I can only imagine the emotions running through your mind. I mean, my daughter has just started calling me Dad. I was Daddy for far too little time. Our daughters grow up so fast!

Following the ceremony we headed to the reception at Glen Magna Farms. I've enjoyed shooting at Glen Magna previously, but had never shot here in late Fall/Winter. This venue has amazing gardens, but this late in the season the colors had long since past. There was still lots of green on the trees, however, including that of the amazing weeping beech tree that Sarah and Scott posed under below...

And the vine covered pergola is always an amazing location for photos no matter what the season...

Another great location at Glen Magna, among so many great locations, is the tree lined carriage road seen on the right. Following our portrait session I captured this moment as Sarah and Scott made their way back to the mansion and their introduction...

Back inside, it was time for intros. Sarah and Scott made their grand entrance down the spiral stairs and into the mansion foyer...

Which was followed by their first dance on the enclosed veranda. In the summer the veranda is wide open, but it buttons up nicely for colder weather too...

And then parent dances...

Scott and his mother really lit up the dance floor, which was such a blast to watch...

Formalities out of the way, all that was left was to party. Before things kicked off into full swing, I snuck back out into the gardens to capture a few twilight images of the mansion...

Then the dancing ensued. Here Scott's father and brother get down, with Scott's best man and Sarah's dad joining in as well...

Although the guest list was relatively small (no one was local; remember Sarah and Scott had just recently moved East) everyone was having a blast and the party felt large...

Scott's best man had some moves, and was showing them off all night long, much to the enjoyment of Sarah...

Ice Fest Face Off

This past Friday night was the Mount Washington Valley Ice Fest Face Off, a mixed climbing competition that brings together many of the strongest climbers from throughout New England. Now in its third year, the competition is fast becoming the highlight of Ice Fest and a great showcase for local hardmen and women. This year I was excited to be photographing the event for Ice Fest, which was made extra fun because I know 90% of the competitors and organizers.

The route this year was set by my good friends Jim Ewing and Josh Hurst, two of the best climbers around. Prior to the competitors arriving, I had a chance to pre-run the men's route, and Jim and Josh set a doosey! Big moves led to a hanging log traverse and then more long reaches through a roof. If you can't work multiple figure-fours in a row you'd get shut down on this route... I know I did!

The competition kicked off following some awesome home-grown climbing films, including a ten minute short by Jim Surette of Steve House soloing Repentance and Remission on Cathedral Ledge. I knew how the story ended -- Steve lived, of course -- but while watching I was convinced we were watching his last moves on this earth. Terrifying! Anyway, the competition began with the women pulling hard and crushing plastic. Here's Allison Colwell in complete control and looking strong...

The second competitor of the evening was Janet Bergman who breached the roof and gained the high point, earning her the win...

For the men's competition there were ten or eleven "invited" competitors and a couple of "wild card" entrants. The competition kicked off with Dana Seaton (left). Dana is a strong rock climber but I don't think he had ever mixed climbed before. Here he is inverted getting ready to tackle the log. At right Peter Doucette shows off some pull-up power...

Below is one of the "wild card" competitors, an Italian climber who's name I did not catch, embarking on the first of 4-5 figure-fours needed to cross the log...

Local guides Kevin Mahoney (left) and Bayard Russell (right) made impressive efforts, making it to the end of the traverse but unable to transition onto the roof...

Vermonter Matt McCormick (left) is shown under the first roof challenge, ready to enter the steeps. Matt climbed strong across the log and transitioned onto the Ice Holdz on the lip of the roof, but he was unable to progress further, earning him second place. On the right Josh Worley also from Vermont resets on the Ice Holdz...

Josh was able to make the three more long reaches to top out on the finishing jug and take the victory. He was the only climber to complete the route.

Congratulations to all of the competitors for your impressive efforts. And special thanks to all the organizers and volunteers who make Ice Fest such a wonderful event, one that I look forward to every year!

Kicking off 2011...

This past Saturday night I kicked off my 2011 wedding season at the Mt. Washington Hotel. Not only was I excited to be at such a great winter venue -- complete with blizzard -- but I was psyched to be photographing Daizha and Tim's intimate wedding.

Here's how I would describe Daizha and Tim: welcoming, funny, gorgeous, patient and rugged. "Rugged" you say? Well, both Tim and Daizha are climbers, but not just rock climbers, ice climbers. For some that's enough said. For everyone else, well, Daizha trekked out in six inches of fresh snow, during whiteout conditions, in a strapless gown and in open toe heels to get "the" shot. Rugged. Thank you both for just being awesome!

Heather & Tom: A Portland Company Wedding

In October I had the great pleasure of photographing Heather and Tom's Portland, Maine wedding. In most cases I am able to meet with my clients prior to their big day, but in this case it just wasn't possible since Heather and Tom were living in Alabama. So, after several conversations and lots of email planning, it was great to finally meet the them the day of. Right away they were both so gracious and open. It probably did not hurt that Tom was old friends with my regular second shooter David... nope, that didn't help at all :-)

Heather and Tom were each getting ready at separate hotels in downtown Portland. I caught up with Heather as she was starting to prepare for the wedding with her makeup...

With hair and makeup just about complete, it was time to get dressed. On the left is Heather's simple yet beautiful dress, and at right the lovely bride...

The dress was made complete with an intricately tied knot which took several attempts and intense focus...

And a final touch up before heading out...

While I was with Heather and her bridesmaids, David was several blocks away with Tom and the groomsmen. Tom focused on his tie...

For their ceremony we all traveled south to Fort Williams Park, home of the Portland Head Light, a Maine icon...

The location is breathtaking, especially in the Fall with bluebird skies and blazing foliage. The park makes a fantastic backdrop for a wedding. Below, Tom eagerly waits for Heather, who is accompanied down the isle by her father...

The ceremony was a very intimate affair held under one of the park's pavilions, and was standing room only...

Fort Williams Park has so many options for portraits. I had several locations in mind, though David and I found ourselves happily clicking away the whole way there! Did I mention the bluebird skies? I love David's image on the right...

And we had to create some portraits with the Head Light, of course...

And the rocky coast below the Head Light made a great backdrop for a portrait of Tom, with the warm light of the setting sun making the shore glow behind Heather...

Among the great features of the park are the old bunkers. We had a lot of fun shooting numerous different poses in these old granite doors and window frames...

With many portraits taken, we headed back to the Portland downtown and to The Portland Company for the reception. I coaxed just a few more portraits out of them, loving the windows found in the old boat yard...

I think this next detail gets my vote for favorite cake shot of the season. Great sunset, industrial backdrop, rich, warm tones.

Lindsay & Jason: A Mount Washington Hotel Wedding

Photographing a lot of weddings each year means I get to go to a lot of parties. This particular party at the Mount Washington Hotel ranked very high on my "absolutely rocked the house" list. Great people, great venue and a great band joined together to make a super memorable evening. So, it is with great pleasure that I present Lindsay and Jason's wedding.

I am not originally from New England, so I can say this without a hometown bias... There is no place in the East more beautiful than the White Mountains in the Fall. Colors explode everywhere, and this made a gorgeous backdrop for the day...

If you are not familiar with it, the Mount Washington Hotel is one of the few truly grand hotels in the region. Nestled at the foot of Mount Washington, approaching the hotel really is breathtaking. Upon arrival, I met up with Lindsay while getting her hair done at the Salon...

In the end, even her hairdresser needed a photo...

Then it was upstairs with the ladies for make-up and dresses...

As they prepped, I gathered up several of Lindsay's things for some detail images. Her simple, yet elegant gown and by far the snazziest shoes I'd seen all year were all must have images. Her dress and her Manolo Blahniks...

For something borrowed and something blue, Lindsay had this handkerchief made from pieces of her grandmother's wedding dress...

... and gorgeous! We paused for a few portraits, and then it was time to head to the ceremony.

The grand staircase at the Mount Washington is a staple location when shooting there. Here I caught all of the ladies heading downstairs, as well as Lindsay's father waiting for her.

While I was clicking away with the ladies, David was doing the same with Jason and the guys. Here is a great shot of Jason getting a final tie straightening from his father...

Then they headed outside for some fresh air and portraits. I love the colors David captured in this one on the right...

With everyone all set, it was showtime. You don't get too many backdrops as spectacular as that found behind the south veranda at the Mount Washington. That's Crawford Notch in the background, which incidentally is also home to some of the region's best ice climbing, for those that wanted to know :-)

Both Jason and Lindsay were nervous prior to the ceremony, but Jason loosened right up...

This wedding was just littered with colorful accents everywhere you looked, including this detail of the groomsmen...

It's official...

Following the ceremony we gathered for family and group portraits. Unfortunately it was cold. The ladies especially were troopers, and we were rewarded for it. Although Mt. Washington was mostly hidden in the clouds, this is still a spectacular setting...

The setting sun peaked under the clouds just enough to reward us with beautiful pink alpenglow for Lindsay and Jason's portraits.

Yes, I am THAT entertaining during the portrait session. Or maybe it was Jason. I don't remember. I am sure it was me...

The newlyweds retreated to their cocktail hour and I snuck into the grand ballroom to document the details. I was floored by the flowers right off. Sara Severance, the Mount Washington Hotel Floral Director, outdid herself. Not only were the bouquets, etc. beautiful, but each table was exploding with colors...

Instead of a centerpiece for each table, Lindsay opted to break apart the centerpieces and create hundreds of smaller arrangements, which were placed in milk bottles and vases. It really was breathtaking. Well done Sara!

Then there were introductions, first dance, dinner, cake cutting, parent dances...

And then it was time to party...

Did I mention that the band rocked? I always love a live band. Hands down, for me they are the most entertaining during a reception. And party band Unity was awesome. From Top 40 to hip hop to rock, they killed it!

But it wasn't just me, I think Lindsay was enjoying it too...

I know that her mother, father and guests were...

Thank you Lindsay and Jason for throwing such a great party, and for inviting me to share in it with you. It really was a memorable night. And thanks David for once again joining me and continuing to "kill it."

Priscilla & Jeff: An Eagle Mountain House Wedding

Earlier in the season I photographed Shanna and John's elopement at the Eagle Mountain House in Jackson, NH. I was excited to once again be at the Mountain House, except this time for Priscilla and Jeff's big day. And what a gorgeous Fall day it turned out to be!

To start the day, I met Priscilla at Debony Salon in Jackson where she and her bridesmaids were getting ready. Priscilla was not available just yet, so I took the opportunity to capture a few details, including her dress and shoes...

I then caught up with Priscilla as Tarmey was styling her hair. It's always exciting to photograph these goings on because so often there is a very light yet energetic atmosphere...

While shooting, the fabulous Carrie from Dutch Bloemen Winkle arrived with the flowers. And, as per usual, they were stunning. I snuck back outside to capture this image of Priscilla's bouquet, while back at the Eagle Mountain House my second shooter David captured Jeff's boutonniere.

Before the pinning, however, David caught this great image of Jeff being helped with his tie...

David also caught this fantastic image of the wedding bands held by Jeff's grandmother, who you will also see a little further down...

With all the primping and preparing done, I present the lovely couple, Jeff and Priscilla as they prepared to depart...

Priscilla and Jeff chose to see each other before the ceremony so that we could get all of the family portraits completed and out of the way, and we had lots and lots to do. I don't often blog group portraits, but we did so many I just feel I have to. And, I really like this colorful image of the wedding party at the waterfalls above Jackson...

Portraits done, now off to the ceremony at the Eagle Mountain House. Here the ladies make their way to site...

And quite a site it is, secluded above the golf courses third tee box, and overlooking the white mountains. Also below is a very serious Jeff, seen here as the justice of the peace begins the service...

But rest assured, Jeff is not all serious, as the image below shows just moments later...

And following the short ceremony, Priscilla poses and Jeff pumps is fist in celebration...

Although we captured the formals beforehand, we took a few minutes alone to make some portraits of the newlyweds. Here are a few of my favorites...

David hiked along the stream a little ways, and looked back to capture the great image below on the left, while I continued to shoot on the bridge and made the relaxed black and white portrait on the right.

Then it was off to the reception in the Carriage House. Below are a few details captured while the guests all enjoyed cocktails on the hotels large veranda...

Details done, on to the festivities, which were kicked off with Priscilla and Jeff's first dance...

Their first dance was followed by toasts and then dinner, after which were parent dances. I love this image of Priscilla with her father...

Jeff and his mother surprised the crowd by kicking off with a brain rattling, head-banging dance...

But they quickly segued to a more traditional tune, seen below...

Following the dances, the party kicked off, but before getting to that, earlier I mentioned Jeff's grandmother and had to include this fun image of her decked out for the photo booth. Too much fun...

Ashley & Scott: Camp Kabeyun Wedding

I've finished my wedding season just in time for the holidays, though not my image processing, and not my under-loved blog. I have many more shoots to be posted in the coming weeks, and here is one I am excited to share today. Every wedding is unique, and some are super unique. Ashley and Scott's casual summer camp wedding was one such.

As a young lad, Scott attended boys camp at Camp Kabeyun on Lake Winnipesaukee in Alton Bay, NH. Now living in Brooklyn, NY, when it came time to say "I do", both Scott and Ashley could not think of a better place than Kabeyun. As I understand, there have only been a few weddings at Kabeyun because it has a very short season. You are restricted to a narrow window from when camp closes and when winter sets in, which is perfect for a beautiful Fall wedding day!

Upon arriving at Kabeyun I was thrown back to my camp days in the Adirondacks in upstate New York. I think it was the smell of a pine forest and the feel of a well-worn foot path that transported me back at first. Then the clapping of the dining hall doors. You can't help but stop and stare skywards in such a place just to take it all in...

After wandering along the winding lakeside path, David and I arrived at the Gnat Cabin where we found Ashley beginning to get ready for the day, and took the opportunity to capture all of the rustic details...

Although lacking for luxuries, the cabin was perfect. Big porch, overlooking the water, and lots of diffused light filtering through the trees.

After spending time with Ashley, it was just about time to go. The final preparation was donning a beautiful hand-made necklace made by Ashley's cousin...

On the other side of the two room Cabin, Scott was eagerly waiting to see his bride-to-be...

Ashley and Scott chose to have a private first look -- so no photos of that -- and then head over to the waterfront to shoot all of the family portraits and group shots prior to the ceremony. This worked really well since the majority of the guests were actually staying in other cabins around the camp. Everyone was already around!

With portraits done, it was off to the sunset ceremony at the camp fire ring. Seriously? Awesome. No camp fire this day, just a heartfelt ceremony performed by a close college friend. Here is Scott watching with anticipation as Ashley approaches accompanied by her mother and father...

During the entire ceremony Scott was blasted in the face by the nuclear setting sun, but despite that he managed to keep a smile on his face the entire service. Here is the exchange of rings...

Always a favorite, the newlyweds recess from the service to a standing ovation!

Following their vows, Ashley and Scott took a few moments alone at what may be one of New Hampshire's best "thinking" spots. How about that view?

A few minutes alone and then I captured them emerging from the woods and headed off to meet up with their guests at the waterfront for a cocktail hour...

The photographs were obviously important to Ashley and Scott, but so having time with their guests was the most important. I was able to tear them away just long enough for a few portraits, however...

Including a series with the glowing sunset behind them...

As dusk quickly approached, the party made its way to the dining hall, and none to soon, as it was going to get very dark, very soon. Here is a great image captured by my second shooter David of the dining hall all ablaze...

Inside, it was kind of like what I remembered camp being, only done up 100x fancier than my own mess hall experiences. The place looked fantastic with flowers, candles and a roaring fire in the stone fireplace to take the chill out of the air...

There were many toasts by Ashley's dad, sister and step-mom, as well as Scott's best man, mother and father, who is shown below.

Everyone had great stories, both humorous and heartfelt...

Following dinner by The White Apron, and Ashley and Scott's first dance, the party kicked off big time with music by DJ Doug Boucher...

The dining hall was rocking and bouncing and probably even swaying. It was certainly vibrating!

Thank you Ashley and Scott for welcoming David and I into your day. Your wedding was so much fun and you both were wonderful to spend the day with.

Chill(ed) Bride...

I am just home from the fantastic, laid-back wedding of Jenna and Jeff. The day started sunny and kind of mild. November weddings in southern New Hampshire can be mild, cool, cold or cold AND wet. We had a little bit of all of it today except for wet, which earns a gold star in my book!

It did get quite cold this afternoon though. During family portraits (outside!) Jenna became so chilled that her teeth began chattering. I relinquished my jacket, but I am not sure that it helped much by that point. I suggested we finish later at the reception, upon which she handed back my jacket and suggested we crack on. Not only was she chilly, but she was totally chill about the whole silly situation of being out in a strapless gown with open-toed shoes. Can you say 'trooper'?

Anyway, as Doug and I were leaving this evening, Jenna jokingly asked, "Can I be on your blog?" Well, of course! A full post will follow in a bit, but in the meantime, Jenna, welcome to the blog. And, I can't believe I actually got you outside again!

Anne & Bayard: A Jaffrey, NH Farm Wedding

All of the weddings that I have been so honored to attend and photograph this year have been amazing. I am blessed with fantastic clients. THANK YOU! This next wedding is no exception. In fact, there have been few weddings that I have been quite as excited about. You see, it was the wedding of two of my friends, Anne and Bayard. On top of that, Anne is a super talented photographer (no pressure there!), and Bayard is one of the region's most prolific climbers. So, their wedding for me was basically a collision of friends, acquaintances and generally rad people.

For this post I've gone a little overboard with the number of images, but I think it'll be worth hanging on for them to download. Apparently, when I know so many people at a wedding I find it extra hard to cull them down. So, with that disclaimer, here's Anne and Bayard's wedding...

Our day began at the Grand View Inn & Resort where Anne and her bridesmaids were getting ready. We beat the ladies back to the Inn from their appointments at the salon, so used the time to capture some details...

I love this next image of all of the bridesmaid's dresses. Every dress was different, but within Anne's color palette...

And, she's back. Hello, Anne! Amongst the hustle of just getting ready, Anne paused for a few moments to review her vows...

I love this shot of Anne's mother helping her with her necklace as bridesmaids look on...

A couple of earrings, a feathery clutch, and it's just about time to go...

While I was enjoying time spent with the ladies, my assistant David was chillin' with the guys back at Bayard's family's farm, where the tented reception would also be held. Though the scene below is not uncommon for the guys, I've seldom come across such a completely laid back group.

Figuring enough relaxing had been done, everyone scattered to get dressed. David found himself wandering the guest house in search of great images. And he found some, including the checklist left for the guys. "Pick up Anne;" I love it!

And Bayard's vows...

This group of groomsmen consisted of some of the most well-known and accomplished climbers and alpinists in the northeast, as well as the country. These are folks who spend months each year camped out on sheer cliffs, glaciers and generally remote, fend-for-yourself areas. Tying a figure-eight knot or clove hitch is no problem, but a neck tie is not a part of their regular attire. This is a great image of Bayard and Freddie tying ties for the other groomsmen!

Back at the Inn, Anne and company were getting ready to depart as well...

So, I mentioned a church ceremony. Anticipating gorgeous weather (why not!), the plan was to move the church outside onto the lawn. Prior to getting ready, the guys were all at the church moving the pews out. It was fantastic! Here is Bayard patiently awaiting Anne's arrival...

Is that her off in the distance? As Anne approached she found it hard to hold back the emotion of the moment. Such a touching series of images as she walked down the isle escorted by her father...

It was obvious that Anne is a wedding photographer. She made sure that they were positioned in beautiful, shaded light. Oh, and Bayard's expression on the right is by far my favorite ceremony capture from the year!

And a great image of the "outside church" by David...

Throughout the ceremony there was laughter, some tears, and a whole lot of touching moments, like the one below...

I love the excitement immediately following the ceremony as the bride and groom exit. Here both Anne and Bayard are congratulated by their mother and father, respectively...

Following some family pictures at the church, it was back to the Farm where we had a little time to set aside for portraits. Below are a couple taken next to the barn that Bayard repainted just for this big day!

Climber hands. As I type this I struggle with my own beat and bruised digits after a great day out at the cliffs with friends, including Bayard.

And then Anne, Bayard and I took a walk around the farm. The evening light was fantastic, and the setting spectacular...

I am so fond of this next image. The light was great, and the fact that it was just behind the family home with the tented reception behind them makes it for me. I love places that have very personal connections...

At the top of the hill behind the house, the setting sun lit up the trees along the edge of the field, but a grand tree provided a little shade for this next portrait. I can't get over the colors. So vibrant...

Then it was hand-in-hand back to the reception...

During the cocktail hour, I snuck into the tent to capture all of the amazing details that Anne worked so hard to pull together. Here is just a sampling...

Formal introductions led to the first dance, a bluegrass number called "Lovin' in my Baby's Eyes" by Leftover Salmon.

Both the maid of honor and the best man made heart-felt and entertaining toasts...

Very entertaining, and maybe a little embarrassing!

The parent dances are always moving, whether they are highly emotional or highly spirited, as these were. Here is Anne and her father...

With formalities out of the way, and the sun set behind the farm, it was time to party!

And party they did! Music was performed by the fantastic Breakin' Strings bluegrass band...

Can you have bluegrass without hats? I think not!

Near the end of the evening, Cliff Randall from Breakin' Strings brought his mandolin out onto the dance floor and really caused a ruckus. Live bands are the best!

And to end this ridiculously long blog post, a final kiss by the newlyweds...

Thank you Anne and Bayard for having me at your wedding. You both were the best to work with, even down to your encouraging me to drop everything and go climbing... "we don't need our pictures, seriously!" Well, I did not do that, but appreciate the sentiment! And thank you David for another great day's effort shooting with me.

Two days with Kismet Rock Foundation

Back in August I was fortunate enough to spend two days with two exceptional groups of kids attending week-long courses with the Kismet Rock Foundation. It's hard to be a climber in the northeast and not at least have heard of Kismet, so I was super excited when Janet Bergman, Executive Director of Kismet, asked me if I would be willing to document a day of Kismet. Of course! How about two days! In their words, Kismet:

"...offers comprehensive courses in rock climbing and mountaineering to children who, because of financial limitations, would not otherwise have access to such an education. Based in North Conway, New Hampshire, (Kismet) accepts emotionally stable and well-functioning youth from both urban and rural areas into its programs. (Kismet's) goal is to offer children an opportunity to benefit from the immense value inherent in a climbing education."

Kismet was founded by Mike Jewell in 1999. By himself he introduced four students from New Jersey to rock climbing in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Today, although Kismet has grown immensely from that first class, Mike is still directly involved with every student who comes through the program.

Climbing has been a central focus in my life for the past 15 years, and therefore I could not honestly think of a better venue for kids to learn valuable life tools. There are so many parallels between climbing and life -- as my good friend Eric Hörst highlighted in his Mental Wings program -- that the concept of growth through a multi-year climbing program just makes perfect sense to me.

On my first day with Kismet I arrived at a house buzzing with activity. Breakfast being gulped down, dishes rattling in the sink, bags being packed. Excitement because we're going CLIMBING!

Half way up Refuse on Cathedral Ledge, two students share a laugh with me. Proof positive that regardless of financial means, home life conditions, etc., at their root, kids will be kids. Laughing, joking, having fun in the great outdoors.

I love the focus in this young man's eyes, as well as the exposure beneath his feet. I have always said how exciting it is that climbing allows you to go places that less than 99% of the people in the world will ever go. This is one of those places, and he ought to be proud!

A student prepares to be lowered after completing a strenuous climb. She crushed it, and an ever attentive staff member lets her know it!

Half way up and still a long way to go on a multi-pitch climb on Cathedral Ledge...

Portrait of a Kismet student...

"What hold," she says. While clicking away I also embraced the opportunity to coach students through tricky cruxes and thought-to-be-impossible moves. In all instances the students succeeded. Sometimes you just have to look at the situation from a different perspective. The impossible can be possible if the problem is viewed differently. And don't hesitate to ask for help, either!

Each day we ended with a dip in the Saco River. It was great to watch the kids splash and play. Kids from all around New England -- rural towns, inner-city, all over -- splashing in a river...

When I showed up at Kismet I did not know the background of any of the kids I would be hanging out with for those two days. I still don't know any particulars, but I know most of these kids have overcome a lot to get to this place. I grew up playing in the mountains as a Boy Scout, ultimately earning my Eagle Scout and guiding in the Adirondacks of New York. At the time I accepted this as normal, as the way things were for kids. What Kismet offers disadvantaged youths for a week each summer is far from their "normal." I am grateful for the opportunities I have been afforded in my life. This summer I was grateful to be able to spend a couple of days sharing some of those same outdoor experience with a dozen kids who may otherwise not have had the opportunity. My two days spent with Kismet were fantastic. I had so much fun getting to know these kids, and the staff, and I am already looking forward to next year.

Jaclyne & Jesse: Mountain View Grand Wedding

I am very excited to share Jaclyne and Jesse's wedding, which took place at the incredible Mountain View Grand hotel in Whitefield, NH, nestled deep in the White Mountains. These two could not have been any more fun to photograph. They were both so excited for the day, and so open to us. And energetic, so much energy! So, without further adieu, I present Jaclyne and Jesse...

When I arrived, Jaclyne greeted me with a huge smile, one that I knew I was going to see many more times that day. She was also fully dressed in her gown... Only two+ hours before the ceremony. No problem. More time for portraits!

Below Jaclyne's mom adds a finishing touch and fastens her pearl necklace...

And, Jaclyne's sister Alyssa makes one final adjustment... and shares one of those "I'm so proud of you" looks...

While the ladies finished getting ready, the flowers arrived. Aren't they lovely?

I posed Jaclyne in from of the window overlooking the golf course with a "grand view" of the White Mountains. The light was fantastic, and there is that infectious smile again...

And one more that I like a lot...

While I was clicking away, David was doing the same with Jesse and his groomsmen. I am not sure I have ever seen so many guys in one small hotel room. There were eight groomsman, a groom, a friend and a second photographer. Wow!

So, with so many people in one room, and excitement over the pending nuptials, what to do other than champagne toasts and some acrobatics!!!

Back at Jaclyne's room, her father/chauffeur arrived to escort his daughter to the church also.

I love this shot of Jaclyne and her bridesmaids leaving the hotel. Even in wide angle you can't miss that smile!

At the church Jesse eagerly awaited the entrance of his bride, which she grandly made through the backlit doors of the church...

The service was very touching with readings from family and friends, and a lovely song sung by Jaclyne's mother. But, it is looks that brides and grooms so often share during ceremonies that I find so wonderful. So intimate, so real.

Following the service, Jaclyne and Jesse made their way back up the Mountain View Grand's winding drive by way of a horse drawn carriage. Here they are pulling up to the hotel and their eagerly awaiting guests...

So many great stories came to life during the toasts given by Jaclyn's father, sister and the best man. Below, Alyssa regales the crowd with a story of growing up with her big sister, as Jesse listens intently...

...and then she delivers the gut-buster! I have so many images of Jaclyne smiling and laughing, though this triptych has to be my favorite among them all!

Toasts finished, dinner served, time to dance!

The party culminated with the crowding lifting up the bride and groom onto their shoulders during a floor-thumping rendition of Sweet Caroline by the live band. College colors even found their way onto the floor. There was so much energy at this moment you felt like the party could have gone on forever.

But, my three hour drive home was grateful that it did not go on forever! I'll end with this final night time portrait out in front of the hotel.

Thank you so much Jaclyne and Jesse for having us at your wedding. You were both so much fun to spend the day with. And thank you David for your help!

Whitney & Travis: A Kittery Point Wedding

I am very excited to share Whitney and Travis' wedding day. Prior to that, I had the great pleasure of spending a morning with them a few weeks prior to their wedding during our engagement photo shoot (more to come on that in a later post), and from that day knew that their wedding was going to be a blast. It did not disappoint! Whitney and Travis are also kindred spirits -- namely climbers -- and they spent their honeymoon backpacking up north. Needless to say, I love these two!

Their wedding took place at Fort Foster at Kittery Point, Maine, which is also where they spend a lot of their time with their dog. For me, it is was a gorgeous location for a wedding off the beaten path. Views of the Atlantic with sail boats gliding along formed the backdrop for the secluded ceremony. The details were also just right. A lemonade and ice water station kept the guests refreshed, and the flowers were lovely additions to the natural beauty of the area. The arrangements, in fact, were all made by Travis' mother. Whitney's wonderful bouquet is below on the right...

It truly was a picture perfect setting...

Whitney and Travis' pup was their ring bearer. After performing her duties she sat to watch the rest of the ceremony from the front row. She had a great seat for the first kiss as husband and wife too...

And the joyful, hand-in-hand recession, which is always a favorite moment during the wedding day for me...

During the relatively short ceremony (maybe 15 minutes) archival artist and family member Michael Arthur drew the amazing piece below. I like to believe my photographs create vivid memories for couples, but this is such a cool and unique piece for them to have. I LOVE it!

Following the ceremony we moved to the shore for family and wedding portraits. My second shooter David captured this great image of Travis and Whitney below. This place is so important to them, and I love how this captures not only the Kittery Point coast but also the intimate connection between these two great people...

This next shot was taken looking through the alter table from their ceremony. Kind of cliche, but I still love it!

Once done, it was back to Portsmouth, one of my favorite places anywhere, and to the Moffatt Ladd House for their reception. The home, built in the 1760s, is a treasure that is often overlooked in town. Though beautiful on the outside, it is the lush gardens and serene setting within the walls that are truly a treasure. Before venturing to the garden reception we grabbed a few portraits in the foyer of the mansion...

As Whitney and Travis mingled with guests I grabbed a few details images. Again, all of the arrangements were made by Travis's mother, and she did an amazing job!

The cocktail hour took place in the gardens and the carriage house. The excellent Pressure's On bluegrass band delighted the guests and were a refreshing change for me after so many (excellent!) rock and pop bands this year...

Following introductions Whitney and Travis shared their first dance...

But it was the father-daughter dance that stole the show. There had not been plans for parent dances, at least as far as the band and I knew, so when Whitney's father met her on the dance floor following her and Travis' dance it was a surprise. No problem. Except the bad rolled into a rippin' bluegrass tune. Now, Whitney is a long-time dancer so this did not dissuade her, but her dad was caught a little off guard. He recovered and they danced a spirited jig. It was awesome!

Keeping to the theme of cool and different, in lieu of a traditional cake cutting there was a pie cutting. All kinds, and boy did they look good!

A few thank-yous from the bride and groom following toasts and it was time to party!

And cut loose they all did...

It was fun seeing Whitney dancing with her sister, who also has a dance background. Those two can cut a rug, and with a kickin' bluegrass band playing, well, they put on a show...

Before calling it a night I stole Whitney and Travis away for a few night portraits. This one below in the gardens behind the Mansion with the reception tent in the side yard...

Shanna & John: Jackson, NH Elopement

Last month I was honored to be one of just a few guests at Shanna and John's elopement to Jackson, NH. They traveled from Chicago to the White Mountains for their intimate wedding celebration having never been before, but on glowing recommendation. Their original plan was for only John's sister to be in attendance, however, three very close friends politely, and with permission, crashed the event. They flew in the night before, drove 3+ hours to the ceremony, celebrated and then flew home the next morning. Very good friends indeed. So, without further adieu, I am excited to share images of Shanna and John's day, starting with the happy couple...

I began the day at the Jackson Community Church. I arrived early and took the opportunity to capture some classic New Hampshire details -- birch trees, granite river stones and the small mountain chapel.

John was the first to arrive, showing nervous signs of excitement. Here he is checking his watch. "I sure hope Shanna is coming," is what I imagined him saying to himself...

And then Shanna arrived. I felt as though I had the best seat in the house because I was the only one who could see the excitement on each of their faces at first. Here Shanna waits for her cue to walk down the isle...

The light in the church was soft and literally wrapped around them both. I love John's restrained smile in the image at left below...

And during their vows with John's sister standing next to her brother...

The service performed by Rev. Lee was very spirited. He is very animated and passionate, as well as funny...

Following the exchange of rings, Shanna and John made their exit from the church. Here the newly married couple walk happily back down the isle...

I was able catch them leaving the church, and pausing for a kiss...

Following the service, we did capture a few images with their friends, but mostly we had a lot of time for portraits. There were no family lineups, no cocktail hour or reception to get to. Only dinner reservations at the Eagle Mountain House where they were staying. So, I was blessed with more time than I ever have with a bride and groom. We started with portraits at the Jackson covered bridge...

And then moved to the wonderful waterfalls that parallel the road leading to the Mountain House...

How New Hampshire is this next image with the pine trees, granite, river and mountains in the background?

After a little time by the river, it was back to the Mountain house for a few more portraits and to meet up with their friends...

I love images with a story, especially ones that make me smile or laugh. John and their three friends that crashed the elopement are all reporters. As such, they spend much of there time reading and creating the news, as well as heads down in their Blackberrys. I snagged this image as Shanna gives a "look" while they all login waiting for their table...

Once inside we were treated to a wonderful little room and an intimate dinner setting...

...and many toasts.

Here is another couple of images that make me laugh. I understood that Shanna had been talking about trying the chili cheese fried since arriving at the Eagle Mountain House on Wednesday. I just love this image of the bride ready to attack a huge plate of them in her white gown. Classic!

Following dinner, Shanna and John stepped out to the porch to make calls to their parents who were not with them this day. I kept my distance for these emotional calls, but captured these images from the moment. Mom and dad may not have been there, but these images allow them to see where their children were as they offered love and congratulations...

Back inside, there was a small cake cutting, followed by more laughter and drinks as the night wound on.

I will end with my favorite image of the evening, maybe even the day, of Shanna and John in front of the glowing Eagle Mountain House...

Thank you Shanna and John for having me along to document your elopement. You were so much fun to spend the day with. As an aside, I always feel honored to be a part of a couple's wedding day, but this day felt extra special. Along with the stories and experiences Shanna and John returned home with from their foray to Jackson, NH, this collection of images is what will visually tell the story of their wedding day to all of their family and friends who were not there. That's pretty cool, I think.

Kim & Al: Lake Winnipesaukee Wedding

I am very excited to be posting images from Kim and Al's Independence Day wedding. You may recall them from their engagement shoot at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, NH, which I posted shortly before their wedding. Kim and Al have an affinity for the water and beautiful places, which is why they selected The Margate Resort as the location for their wedding. They were not disappointed, and were treated to a pleasant summer breeze, dramatic skies, breath-taking views and an energetic group of family and friends.

We started the day with Kim getting ready at the private lake-side residence that her family rented for the week.

Of the many things I remember from the great time I had photographing Kim and Al for their engagement session, one that stands out the most was Kim's smile. Here, she and her wonderful smile are putting on the finishing touches...

Once ready, we stepped out onto the dock for a few portraits where we realized we could look over and see The Margate just a little ways away. Though not visible in this lake shot below, you could actually see Al and his groomsmen milling about the ceremony location with my second photographer David.

While I was clicking away with Kim and her bridesmaids, David was doing the same with Al and his groomsmen. He captured this great portrait of Al below...

As well as this one, which I really like, of the sharp dressed men...

Kim's nephew was the ring-bearer for the ceremony. I was able to get him to stand still just long enough to capture this ring shot, then he was back to hamming for the camera...

Kim and Al chose to have a 'first look' before the ceremony, which is always fun. I love the triptych below as Kim walks out from the hotel and Al eagerly awaits his bride-to-be...

The short wedding ceremony was held on the side lawn overlooking the lake.

Kim's brother Tim was the officiant for the service. At one point, between Al and Tim, Kim was practically doubled over in laughter. It truly was an enjoyable service, and as always, culminated in a kiss...

Always a fun moment, Kim and Al are seen below exiting the ceremony...

We very quickly posed for a few portraits along the lake front and on the pier...

Then Kim and Al were off to their reception and David and I quickly captured some details of the reception room, which overlooked the lake. As a sidebar, this room was made for bounce flash I think. I was loving the vaulted ceiling.

Kim and Al had a small cake for their cutting, and treated their guests to chocolate and yellow cupcakes. Mmmm...

Following introductions and Kim and Al's first dance, Kim shared a very moving dance with her father. I hope when my daughter gets married she looks this happy on her wedding day!

Then it was time to party. And party they did! Below, Kim and Al finish a very spirited dance with a bow to their guests...

The reception room overlooked the lake, and it did not take long to recognize that there was going to be an amazing sunset this evening. At the right time, we left the reception for a few moments to capture some portraits with a painted sky as the backdrop...

Back inside, David manned the photo booth that we brought for the event. I don't often operate a photo booth at weddings, but on occasion it can be a lot of fun. Now, I must admit, to keep the blog rated G instead of PG-13, I've only posted the two photos below of adorable nieces and nephew. Suffice it to say, there were a lot of inside jokes displayed in the photo booth this evening!

As the evening wound to an end, everyone who remained moved outside to try and catch some of the fireworks being set off around the lake. We also had some fun with sparklers...

And as a parting shot, I leave you with a sunset kiss...

Lynn & Dan: An Ocean View Inn Wedding

As far as days go, Lynn and Dan could not have hand picked a better one for their mid-day, ocean side wedding. Spring in New England can be a little touch-and-go, but on this day the sun was shining, the sky was blue, and there was a pleasant ocean breeze that greeted us as we arrived at the Ocean View Inn in Gloucester, MA.

I began the day with Lynn and her bridesmaids in the bridal suite as they were preparing for the nuptials to take place downstairs.

Beautiful, bright light shone in throughout the entire room illuminating Lynn as she slipped into her dress...

I love this image of the flower girl with her bouquet...

Lynn's father Eric was in and out during the preparations, always with a smile. He struck me as nearly excited as Lynn!

And here is Lynn ready to head downstairs...

Before moving on to the ceremony, below is a collection of details from the morning.

Lynn and Dan's wedding service took place in the main living room of the Inn. As I understood, quite a few more people than expected arrived, which necessitated breaking out more chairs, and still dozens of people were standing along the back of the room. Needless to say, a spacious room became quite tight and a little on the warm side, and moving around was difficult. One of my favorite image from the ceremony is below on the right, taken from outside the room through a small window by the stairs.

Lynn and Dan were surrounded by their family and friends, in what was an intimate and moving service.

When they finally turned around, I was not surprised at all to be greeted by Lynn's smile...

Following the ceremony we moved outside and across the road to the rocky coastline for formal -- and not-so formal-- portraits. There was not a cloud in the sky and I think everyone enjoyed the extra space and cool breeze.

Once done, it was back inside for dinner and dancing. Here Dan dips his lovely new bride...

And my assistant David caught this wonderful kiss at the end of the first dance!

Often parent dances are amongst the most emotional moments of the wedding day. This embrace by Dan's mother Mary is just priceless...

Once the festivities died down and guests began departing, Lynn, Dan and I moved back outside for some portraits of just the two of them, taking advantage of the lowering sun...

Kim & Al: Odiorne Point Engagement

In just a couple of short weeks I will be photographing Kim and Al's wedding in Laconia, NH. I am very excited for their Fourth of July wedding, and it's going to a blast! I know this because I got to spend a really fun evening this past Fall getting with Kim and Al during their engagement session. I thought I would share a few of my favorite images from that colorful evening prior to the big day.

Meet Kim and Al...

We met a little before sunset at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, NH in order to catch the warm light of the setting sun.

For about an hour we wandered around to various locations within the Park, including different aspects of the rocky shore line.

Once the sun dipped behind the trees we left the park and headed back towards Portsmouth, NH on Rt. 1A, stopping at the inlet bridge just a little ways from the park entrance. The light here was incredible, and the Fall foliage gorgeous. There were also several small tidal pools along the grass flats that allowed for nice reflections.

Kim and Al proved to be real troopers when I asked them if they were willing to trudge across the flat to this old dock. I have photographed here before and always like it. I think Kim was skeptical, even after we got there, but I know she loved the results, if not the wet feet!

As the sun sank even lower we traipsed across the bridge to the other side of the inlet. I love the texture in the grass, and and the light was still warm and pleasing.

Sterling Rope Photo Shoot with Big Up Productions

A couple of months ago I was part of a great project with Sterling Rope in Biddeford, Maine. Sterling has recently released it's new F4 Escape Kit, a critical safety tool for firefighters in the event they need to make a quick exit from a multi-story building. The F4 is a hands-free rope decent device coupled with a high heat resistant rope, grappling hook and deployment bag. All in, there is a lot of very elegant technology in a very compact package.

On this day, I was brought in to capture still images of the F4 in use while members of the Portland Fire Department put the kit through its paces. Big Up Productions was also on site filming the action. Their teaser clip is posted at the end of this post.

Below, a fighfighter bails out of a second story window at a burn house in Portland. The intimidating Crosby Hook anchors to the window jam allowing for a fast and secure exit. On the right is a detail of the F4 rigged and ready for deployment prior to bailing...

Here is an internal view of the Crosby Hook being set, while on the right the Captain watches closely in the burned house...

Shown below is another detail of the F4 device, in this instance weighted during a lower. Depress the handle and the FireTech rope eases through the device. Let go and you stop.

Here is a portrait from the day that I love. This image was captured in between location setup...

I thought it would be fun to include some behind the scenes images from the day in this post. First up is me on the roof top of the building next door. Perspective is so important in high-angle shooting, and this roof offered me a good one. It was from this position I captured the first image in this post. Thanks goes to my assistant David for the images of me...

It was great working with Josh and Brett Lowell from Big Up, and seeing how they rig their shots. Over the years I have enjoyed their climbing films, and often wondered how they setup for some of their amazing angles and sequences, as well as the equipment they use. Today, the lines between still photography and video are blurring. The 5D MkII is a digital SLR that also shoots stunning high definition (HD) video. All of the visual effects that you can get out of the still camera are available in motion, such as a very shallow depth of field. It truly is amazing, and cool to see this equipment being used by Big Up. Below, Brett adjusts the Canon 5D MkII.

Here, Josh is operating the boom used for their silky smooth vertical pan shots (see video below). The boom allows for fantastic perspective otherwise unattainable. Oh, and that is me hanging out of the attic window too!

Back inside, we blocked off windows and added some warm light to the scene. In this shot, a firefighter was to cross the top of the stairs, making his way to the bathroom window. Josh, Brett and the Captain confer with JB from Sterling.

Below is one final image of me shooting detail of a nule post anchor with firefighter exiting through the bathroom (outside of the frame).

They repeatedly trudged back upstairs only to jump out the window again in full turn out gear, with oxygen equipment. Awesome! Sterling is always a great client to work with, and this day was no exception.

Allison & Dan: A Zorvino Vineyards Wedding

On April 3 I had the great pleasure of photographing Allison and Dan's wedding at the Exeter Inn and reception at Zorvino Vineyards. A few "technology" issues have sidelined me from blogging images from their wonderful day -- as well as anything else for that matter -- but I am almost up and running again, and at least able to post! Look for more posts as I begin to exit the log jam. Now, back to my point...

We had an incredible Spring in the Northeast. Not like last year where it rained pretty much straight through until August. Easter weekend was no exception. It was a great day for a wedding...

Both Allison and Dan prepared for their nuptials at the Exeter Inn. The halls were a buzz of attendants flirting back and forth between separate wings at the Inn, while the bride and groom tried hard to not see each other beforehand.

Here is Allison having the final touches put on her makeup before getting dressed.

I think it is worth noting that the week prior to their wedding Allison was in Haiti with the earthquake relief effort, and following the wedding Allison was home for only a couple of weeks before heading back. Kudos to you!

In the guy's room, Dan was nervous, but having a good time!

Some may ask what is going on in this next photograph, but to a climber it's perfectly obvious -- BETA! Allison's brother Jon is an avid climber, like me, and I was psyched to see him miming his latest project...

Prep completed, everyone headed downstairs for the wedding ceremony...

From the moment Allison walked down the isle with her father, through most of the ceremony, Dan was grinning ear to ear. I love seeing that.

Following the ceremony we all headed out to the Inn's back lawn for portraits and to enjoy the wonderful weather. Here is an intimate moment between the new husband and wife...

Then it was off to Zorvino Vineyards for the reception. Here is a capture from Allison and Dan's first dance as a married couple...

I was accompanied by photographer Doug Levy. Below is a great image taken during the cake cutting. I love the perspective and expression that Doug captured...

The party then kicked off in a big way. I think everyone was enjoying themselves...

Including the newlyweds!
